| The ancient medieval district of Segine belonged to the Count of Lecce in 12th century when it was donated to the Angevin Convent of San Giovanni Evangilista of Lecce. In 1294 it was granted as fiefdom by Carlo II d'Angio to Gervasio Acaya. The Acaya family held the fiefdom for three centuries.
A unique example of a fortified city of Southern Italy, Acaya survived unscathed for many centuries and was typical of an ideal Renaissance city.

Castel del Monte was built by Frederick II in about 1240. Because of his intelligence and learning Frederick was known as the "stupor mundi", the wonder of the world. Some believe that the castle was built as a hunting residence but Frederick never visited it and it's true purpose remains a mystery. The castle does not have the defences required to make it a fortress, neither does it have the basic amenities to make it a royal hunting lodge.

A great day out for children and adults alike. The Fasano Zoo Safari and Amusement Park is 45/60 minutes drive from Villa Rosa.
Take the Lecce - Brindisi superstrada and then the SS379 towards Bari. As you approach Fasano the Zoo Safari is clearly signposted.
